Kick back, relax and enjoy reading recommendations from the L&G team.
Recently, our office made a commitment to encourage each other to read more. We all promised to stop the Netflix binging (tears) and created a consecutive list of novels that we’ll read together (go team!)
Below are the top 5 choices we’re starting with. Would love to get your suggestions too!
1. When Breath Becomes Air, Paul Kalanithi
Beautiful and heart-wrenching, When Breath Becomes Air is a biography that focuses are renowned neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi, who becomes diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer at the peak of his career. We wouldn’t be surprised if we could finish this 256-page turner in one sitting.
2. The Sympathizer, Viet Thanh Nguyen
“The winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, as well as six other awards, The Sympathizer is the breakthrough novel of the year. With the pace and suspense of a thriller and prose that has been compared to Graham Greene and Saul Bellow, The Sympathizer is a sweeping epic of love and betrayal. The narrator, a communist double agent, is a “man of two minds,” a half-French, half-Vietnamese army captain who arranges to come to America after the Fall of Saigon, and while building a new life with other Vietnamese refugees in Los Angeles is secretly reporting back to his communist superiors in Vietnam. The Sympathizer is a blistering exploration of identity and America, a gripping espionage novel, and a powerful story of love and friendship.”
3. A Man Called Ove, Fredrik Backman
A Man Called Ove is a classic story about looking past someone’s exterior. Expected to be comical, heartwarming and charming, our team is so excited for this one!
4. A Dog’s Purpose, Britt Robertson
If you know us at all, you would know that we are HUGE dog lovers. No book club of ours wouldn’t be complete without a book narrated from the perspective of a dog. We made it a goal to finish this book before we watched this on the big screen as a team. Lessons on the fact that true love never dies? We’re there.
5. The Spy, Paulo Coelho
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is one of the best books ever written, so when he released The Spy back in November, we knew we had to have this title on our list. Our office often talks about women and our rights, so this book is sure to set off some thoughtful conversations and interesting viewpoints.
