Styling Series: Where to Put Small Rugs

11/22/2019

Kelley here again, the resident Stylist at Lulu and Georgia. We've received a lot of feedback that people are unsure how to style our smaller rugs. Fret not, I'm here to help! I've put together a brief guide to show the spaces in your home best suited for smaller rugs. Read on for my tips.

1. In the Kitchen

For areas with a lot of foot traffic, small rugs can be placed where most of the standing occurs, like in front of the sink. Since the kitchen is prone to spills - choose a rug that can stand up to the mess. Darker wool rugs are a great choice here. We also love indoor/outdoor rugs because they wash right up.

2. In the Bathroom

You don’t need to go with the traditional bathmat in the bathroom. Wool rugs, so long as they aren't left in standing water work great. For single vanity a 2' x 3' or 3' x 5' rug works great depending on the size of the room. For a double vanity 2, 2' x 3' rugs or a runner are best. You can also add a rug outside of the shower or next to the bath - just make sure it's not left in standing water.

3.In the Bedroom

A couple of smaller rugs on either side of your bed is a great option if you don't have the space for a larger rug under the bed. A 2' x 3' or 3' x 5' will do depending on the space on the space you have and it ensure your feet land on soft ground the moment you get out of bed. For the bedroom, we love cozy shag rugs or rugs with higher pile.

4.In the Entry

Consider the use of the rug for the entry, if you live in a cold or wet climate, make sure to choose a rug that will withstand moisture. If you plan to remove your shoes before walking into the house, a higher pile rug is a nice option. In a larger foyer entryway, plan to keep the edges of the rug about 12” from walls or furniture to keep the rug from feeling too big or small in the space. We also love to layer a smaller rug with a jute in an entry for more depth and texture.
