We believe home design should be stylish and distinctive. Not sure what style fits your space best when searching for lighting elements? Don’t worry; we have got you covered. Check out our tips below for ideas and inspiration as you choose the best bathroom light fixtures to buy for your space.

The Elements of Bathroom Lighting

We want our bathrooms to be well-lit spaces—from bright, functional lighting for getting ready and self-care regimens, toned tone warm lighting for a late-night soak, or decorative statement pieces that bring a point of view to a space that often has a limited footprint. In other words, we want layered lighting. Let’s look at some of the elements that make up a well-considered bathroom or powder room lighting plan. Remember, lighting is a bespoke recipe; not every ingredient will be needed in the same proportions, but these are the essentials.

Bathroom Wall Lighting

In your bathroom, wall lighting primarily consists of sconces used for task or accent lighting. For task light, you can flank your vanity mirror with a pair of single sconces at about eye level so there are no harsh shadows in the reflection—classic and modern takes on a torchiere sconce can work well here. A bathroom sconce can also highlight a feature of the room, such as an accent wall in a powder room. Here, you may want to focus on eye-catching designs such as this Canales Long Sconce, which will elevate your decor while washing the wall in light. Bathroom Vanity Lighting

Let’s break vanity lights into their own category from sconces or bathroom ceiling light fixtures. Vanity lights provide task light for grooming and skincare, but in a smaller space, such as a powder room or guest bath, they can also serve as a primary source of ambient light. Something like this Cheverny Vanity Light by Christiane Lemieux is the perfect way to bring some designer flare to your vanity—the milk glass cups offer diffused illumination over your mirror while throwing light up to reflect off the ceiling and fill the space. If you’re looking to add some character to a powder room or en suite, bathroom vanity lighting can be a great way to elevate the tone with something distinctive.

Bathroom Ceiling Lights

Bathroom ceiling lights cover several fixtures, including pendants, flush mounts, and (for that extra touch of luxury) chandeliers. No matter the style, we want our bathroom ceiling light fixtures to add not just to the room's ambient light but also to its curated character. Flush and semi-flush mount designs such as this Karol Flush Mount Light are great ways to bring a luxe tone to a space with lower ceilings. If ceiling height allows, bathroom pendant lighting and chandeliers are a great way to make a statement in this space, but as with all bathroom fixtures, you want to be sure you’re shopping for damp or wet-rated designs.

How to Choose and Style Bathroom Light Fixtures for Your Edit

Whether updating your bathroom sconces or reimagining your powder room lighting, the elements you shop online or in a showroom should all be chosen with your space in mind. You want to picture how the light will fit your space and what the silhouette will bring to the room. Here are a few tips to consider as you shop.

Start with the basics. Specs and safety are essential parts of any lighting project, but this is especially true in a bathroom where moisture and electricity are close companions. Be sure to shop for damp or wet-rated designs and consult with a professional about placement and installation.

Match other elements in the room. Everything doesn’t need to match exactly, but in a bathroom every small touch—from the finishes of the faucets to the drawer pulls to the colors in your bath bath mat—sits in a close curation. You want to coordinate these elements so that they complement or contrast each other in a meaningful way.

Touch it up with texture. Many bathroom surfaces and finishes are smooth and polished. Woven lighting elements can be a great way to add texture. If you have the height for bathroom pendant lighting, consider going for a modern coastal feel with something like this Odilia Pendant Light.

Layer in luxury with light. Other materials and finishes, such as brass, alabaster, and marble, can lift the tone of your space. Lighting can seem like a small touch, but if you have a little more budget for your bathroom edit, it's a great place to spend for impact. These relatively small spaces are a brilliant place to let your inner designer play and explore.
