Let’s Start With Basics: Chaise or Daybed

There are furniture elements that help functionally ground a space, ones that add bold flair, and others that become everyday favorites simply for their comfort or convenience. A well-chosen chaise or daybed can effortlessly straddle all three categories. The chaise lounge has provided a voguish addition to spaces from sitting rooms to bedrooms for centuries—from iconic French and Victorian styles to the sculptural showcases of modern design. Daybeds are a practical yet luxurious feature, creating a place for repose or a quick nap with an equally timeless charm. The perfect chaise or daybed should reflect and elevate your aesthetic—but with words like a daybed, chaise, double-chaise, and media lounger used so often and sometimes interchangeably, it may be helpful to start with definitions.

Chaise Lounges

Ah, the chaise. The French name itself conjures up images of a velvet-clad fainting couch amidst an opulent curation. The truth is there are chaises of every cut and style—from modern chaises that nod to Memphis design of the 1980s to trim and tailored designer exclusives like our Rivington Chaise by Ginny Macdonald. A chaise lounge essentially extends the profile of an accent chair. Chaises typically do best in a room with plenty of space. They work best floated away from the wall in a family room, next to a large window, or in the corner of a morning room or large bedroom—creating the perfect place to stage an outfit. A double-chaise (as defined by width) may also be called a media lounger.

Daybeds

Daybeds have been finding their way into more photo spreads and living spaces. The classic daybed lounge is typically a low-profile frame with a thick mattress—typically the size of a twin mattress. These are perfect for floating in the room or next to a window, offering everything from couch seating to a place to curl up. The versatility of these pieces also makes them a great addition to a workspace-cum-guestroom or nursery. Our Rise Daybed by Sarah Sherman Samuel is a perfect example of how a low-profile design can offer functional versatility and a stylish edge with minimalist impact.

How To Style a Chaise or Daybed in Your Space

We have all had the experience: the perfect find online or in a showroom, love at first sight, that flurry of excitement, only to get home and find out it feels completely out of place. No element exists in isolation—each is a part of the grand design informed by the physical constraints of a room, the way you and your family use it day-to-day, and most importantly, the aesthetic whole—your vision and taste for the space. So, as you fall in love with a certain double chaise or the perfect traditional-meets-modern daybed, try to fall in love with the piece in your space—picture them next to this window or offering visual balance across from that console table. Here are a few tips on placement and styling to help you get started.

No matter where you place it, a chaise should have room to breathe in your layout. Let the space feel uncluttered and natural. Remember, a chaise is a signature statement that speaks to your unique design sense. You can make it stand out by laying out a bold rug, or create a chic and cozy reading nook by adding a side table or floor lamp that reflects or thoughtfully contrasts with the chaise’s design.

Another option for a family room or a more casual lounge is to purchase a double chaise like our Kaila Media Lounger. With ample room to spread out or cozy up, the wide, rounded design can take the place of a loveseat or sofa in a space dedicated to kicking back and enjoying a movie or reading together. If you want to make a refined design statement with room for two, try floating something like our Vivi Tête-À-Tête Chaise in the space. A tête-à-tête chaise features backrests on both sides that face each other for comfort and conversation, offering a unique feature with chic appeal.

Daybeds are also a dynamic addition to any design. If you want to make the most of a multi-use space, consider buying a daybed sofa that offers dual functionality. You can style these pieces with pillows and throws to offer extra seating, providing the perfect place to curl up for a nap or even double as an occasional guest bed. A rattan daybed or slim-framed design can offer sofa-style seating with less visual weight, leaving a smaller space like a guest room, home office, or media room feeling airy, open, and visually balanced.

Daybeds do not need to be stashed in guest rooms or piled under pillows, though. A plushly upholstered daybed sofa can be a stylish addition for effortless comfort in the window nook of a formal living room or floated a safe distance from a fireplace. When you shop daybeds, you will discover nearly endless opportunities to refine your aesthetic while transforming the functionality of the space.
