The Elements of Bathroom Wall Lighting

We want our bathroom lighting to be on point and dynamic, whether bright and functional for self-care regimens or toned down for a late-night soak. Bathroom sconces and other wall-mounted fixtures are an essential part of your lighting recipe. Let’s start with the basic elements of wall lighting.

Bathroom Sconces

In a bathroom, wall sconces are primarily used for task or accent lighting. Sconces are a great way to add light while creating a point of interest with a standout silhouette. A double sconce bathroom light, like our stylish Keanu Sconce, can highlight a feature, such as an accent wall in a powder room. You can also use sconces for bathroom mirror lighting. Whether at a vanity or full-length frame, flanking the mirror with single-sconce bathroom lights at about eye level will illuminate your view while eliminating harsh shadows in the reflection.

Bathroom Vanity Lighting

Vanity lights provide task light for grooming and skincare, but in a smaller space, such as a powder room or guest bath, they can also serve as a primary source of ambient light to augment a bathroom ceiling light. Something like this Cheverny Vanity Light by Christiane Lemieux is the perfect way to bring some designer flare to your vanity—the milk glass cups offer diffused bathroom mirror lighting while reflecting off the ceiling to fill the space. If you’re looking to add some character to a powder room or en suite, bathroom vanity lighting can be a great way to elevate the tone with something distinctive.

How to Choose and Style Bathroom Wall Lights

Whether updating your bathroom sconces or looking for the perfect vanity light, the elements you shop online or in a showroom should all be chosen with your space in mind. Whether it’s a single sconce bathroom light or a 4-light vanity fixture, you want to picture how the light will fit your space and what the silhouette will bring to the room. Here are a few tips to consider as you shop.

Start with the basics. Specs and safety are essential for any lighting project, but this is especially true in a bathroom where moisture and electricity are close companions. Be sure to shop for damp or wet-rated designs and consult with a professional about placement and installation.

Match other elements in the room. Everything doesn’t need to match exactly, but in a bathroom, every small touch—from the finishes of the faucets to the colors in your bath mat—sits in close curation. You want to coordinate these elements so that they complement or contrast each other in a meaningful way.

Go for a dynamic design. Are you having trouble making your bathroom lighting plan work? Plug-in sconces and adjustable designs can offer a dynamic solution for unique layouts. If you can’t hardwire a fixture, something like this damp-rated Eugene Plug-In Sconce lets you bring in extra light with no footprint. The swingarm also allows you to direct and adjust the light.

Layer in luxury with light. Other materials and finishes, such as brass, alabaster, and marble, can lift the tone of your space. Elements like a double sconce bathroom light can seem like a small touch, but if you have a little more budget for your bathroom edit, it's a great place to spend for impact. These relatively small spaces are a brilliant place to let your inner designer play and explore.
