How to Choose the Right Ceiling Fan for Your Space

It is easy to forget that when we walk into a room, we experience it with almost all our senses. While a sleek coffee table can elevate the visual aspect of a room and a texturally rich rug can ground the space with a soft touch and even help dampen noise, ceiling fans add a dimension to your living areas that is hard to define but impossible to miss. To achieve this, it is essential first to consider the room's proportions—both the square footage and the height—to find the best ceiling fan for your space. For example, a bedroom ceiling fan may have a smaller diameter than a living room ceiling fan since it serves a smaller area. Similarly, a ceiling fan flush mount may be the optimal choice for a room with a lower ceiling, whereas a taller room may require a downrod—a metal pole that drops the height of the ceiling fan.

Ceiling fans are measured by diameter, from the tip of one of the blades to the center multiplied by two. For best air circulation, a fan with up to a 48-inch diameter is suitable for a space up to 200 square feet. A fan with up to a 56-inch diameter is ideal for an area up to 400 square feet. Anything larger can accommodate a larger space. Some designs, such as our Aurore Ceiling Fan, come in multiple sizes so that you can fit the right style to the right area.

Typically, ceiling fans should hang no lower than 7-feet for safety but no higher than 9-feet for good airflow. Many fans come with a 4.5-inch downrod which is ideal for a standard 9-foot room. If you are shopping for upstairs bedroom ceiling fans or another more compact space, you may want a ceiling fan flush mount design to ensure at least 7-feet of clearance. For taller ceilings, different length downrods can be purchased to suit your space.

How to Style a Ceiling Fan

Of course, the best ceiling fans do more than circulate air; they blend seamlessly into your aesthetic, reflecting and augmenting the design notes in your look. Streamlined three-blade designs are an excellent choice for refined, polished spaces full of sculptural decor. Other fans pair traditional notes with clean-line silhouettes to fit a collected, timeless decor. Most ceiling fans come in different finishes so that you can precisely tailor the piece to your decor. Beyond finish and profile, there may be other design features you want to consider. For example, you may wish to find bedroom ceiling fans with lights if it is taking the place of a light fixture. This Indi Ceiling Fan + Light is fitted with a light and mixes modern lines with natural wood blades making it an ideal bedroom ceiling fan for a transitional aesthetic.

Living room or bedroom ceiling fans can offer almost endless ideas to enhance any style of home design. You can use it as a daring accent, completely reimagining an entire room and bringing it to life. They can bring new textures and finishes to your ceiling, adding a new dimension to your home with an eye-catching sleek feature. Choose the best ceiling fan to echo and refine other design elements at play in the room for tailored appeal.

Whichever way you decide to style it, remember that your ceiling fans allow you the flexibility to showcase the nuances of your design aesthetic. Loved ones and guests can immediately understand who you are by seeing how you have utilized this accent to build on your home's look.
