Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting extends the usability of a patio or entry after dark, defines the architectural character of the exterior, and — when chosen well — contributes a considered aesthetic that matches the quality of the outdoor furniture and interior design it surrounds. At Lulu and Georgia, the outdoor lighting collection brings together exterior-rated wall sconces, pendant lights, and lanterns in metal, glass, and weather-resistant finishes — outdoor fixtures chosen for their visual quality as objects and the quality of the light they produce in an exterior setting.

What outdoor lighting does Lulu and Georgia carry?

The collection includes exterior-rated wall sconces in matte black, antique brass, and bronze finishes for flanking a front entry or illuminating a covered patio wall, pendant lights rated for covered outdoor installation in metal and glass, post and column lanterns for pathway and entry illumination, and string lights for ambient outdoor light in a covered porch or pergola. All fixtures in the collection are rated for outdoor installation; wet-location and damp-location ratings are noted for each product.

What is the difference between wet-rated and damp-rated outdoor lighting?

A wet-rated fixture is certified for installation in locations directly exposed to rain and weather — a front porch fixture fully exposed to the elements, a fixture over an uncovered entry door. A damp-rated fixture is certified for covered or sheltered outdoor locations where the fixture is protected from direct rain but exposed to humidity and temperature changes — a covered patio, a pergola, or a screened porch. Using a damp-rated fixture in a wet location will shorten its life and may create a safety hazard; using a wet-rated fixture in a damp location is always acceptable. Check each product page for the fixture's specific rating before installation.

How do I choose the right size outdoor wall sconce?

For flanking a front door, the sconce should be approximately one-quarter to one-third the height of the door — a standard 80-inch door calls for a sconce 20-27 inches tall. Place flanking sconces so the center of each fixture aligns with the door's midpoint height (approximately 60 inches from the ground) and 6-8 inches from the door casing. For a single sconce beside a door, mount it at 60-66 inches from the ground on the latch side of the door. For a covered patio or pergola wall, choose a sconce that provides adequate spread of light for the wall length — most exterior wall sconces illuminate a 6-10 foot radius.
