The living room rug is the single most impactful object in the room — it defines the seating area, grounds the furniture, absorbs sound, and establishes the visual character of the space from the first step in. At Lulu and Georgia, the living room rug collection spans hand-knotted wool, flat-weave and kilim styles, natural fiber and jute, performance and indoor-outdoor options, and statement patterned rugs — in a range of sizes from accent to oversized, and in patterns and palettes suited to every living room configuration.
What living room rugs does Lulu and Georgia carry?
The collection includes hand-knotted and hand-tufted wool area rugs, flat-weave kilim and dhurrie styles, natural fiber jute and seagrass, performance rugs in synthetic and wool-blend constructions, and oversized statement rugs for larger living rooms. Sizes range from 5×8 accent rugs to 10×14 and larger for open-plan spaces. Patterns span solid and textural, geometric and abstract, traditional and contemporary.
What size rug works in a living room?
For a standard living room, an 8×10 rug works for most sofa arrangements; a 9×12 or larger is better for open-plan spaces or rooms with sectionals. All front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug — this anchors the seating group and creates a defined zone within the room. A rug with only the coffee table on it reads as too small. When in doubt, size up: a larger rug makes a room feel more generous and intentional, a smaller rug makes it feel underscaled.
What rug pile height works best in a living room?
Low to medium pile (under 3/4 inch) is the most versatile for a living room — it works under furniture without causing instability, vacuums easily, and wears well under regular foot traffic. High-pile and shag rugs feel luxurious underfoot but require more maintenance and are less practical under heavy furniture. For a high-traffic living room used daily, a low-pile wool or performance rug offers the best balance of comfort, durability, and visual appeal.
