Sateen is the bedding weave for people who like their sheets to feel smooth and have a subtle sheen — a four-over-one-under weave construction that exposes more of the fiber's surface and produces a silky, slightly lustrous hand that is warmer and softer than percale. At Lulu and Georgia, the sateen bedding collection brings together cotton sateen sheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases chosen for the quality of the long-staple cotton and the smooth, warm drape that makes a sateen-made bed feel genuinely luxurious.
What sateen bedding does Lulu and Georgia carry?
The collection includes sateen cotton flat and fitted sheet sets, sateen duvet covers in solid and tonal colorways, sateen pillowcases in standard, queen, and king sizes, and coordinating shams. Most sateen bedding in the collection is made from long-staple or Pima cotton for extended softness and durability. Colorways include classic white and ivory as well as a palette of warm, muted tones suited to the Lulu and Georgia bedroom aesthetic.
Is sateen bedding good for hot sleepers?
Sateen is not the ideal choice for hot sleepers — the tight weave structure traps more heat than percale or linen, and the smooth surface does not dissipate warmth as effectively as a plain weave. For hot sleepers, percale cotton, linen, or hemp bedding are better choices. Sateen is an excellent choice for people who sleep cold, who live in cooler climates, or who want the warmth and softness of the weave in winter months. In a bedroom with good climate control, sateen works year-round for most sleepers.
How do I care for sateen cotton sheets?
Wash sateen sheets in warm water on a gentle cycle — hot water degrades the fiber and increases pilling. Tumble dry on low heat; high heat causes sateen to pill faster than any other factor. Do not use fabric softener, which reduces the fiber's ability to breathe and accelerates pilling. Remove from the dryer promptly to preserve the smooth surface. The sheen of sateen cotton is inherent to the weave and does not diminish significantly with proper washing; pilling, if it occurs, is almost always caused by washing with rough fabrics or drying at high heat.
