Versatile and Functional
As an incredibly versatile and effortless piece in your home, a console table can fit well in many spaces. They are the ideal perch for décor elements, books and lamps; and are perfect in entryways, dining rooms, living rooms and hallways. They add visual interest, height and depth, and function best when they are anchored against a wall, or are placed against the back of a sofa.
The size and silhouette of a console table matters with regards to the space. Many are simple and sleek with straight lines; while others offer a more elegant and curved appearance. Additionally, the construction should blend well with the style of your home. An organic, wooden planked table would be great in a farmhouse style kitchen, where glassware and ceramics can be displayed. A delicate aged brass console table fits in a more traditional home and can be filled with books and pretty, vintage finds.
Lulu and Georgia offers a curated collection of console tables. Discover one best for your space and check out our tips on how to style them below, based upon the space and your individual creativity.
Entryway Tables as a Stylish Way to Welcome Guests
One of the more common uses of entryway consoles is in the entryway, where they can act as both a statement piece and as a functional place for storing other items. When choosing a table, consider the size of your entryway. If you’re working with a small area, find one that is smaller in length, but is curved, giving you more space to display accent pieces as well as lighting elements.
If your entryway is larger, opt for an entryway console table that is bigger in scale. If the table is too small it can feel lost in the room, creating a sense of too much empty white space. This can make your entrance feel uninspired, as well as too open and blank.
Once you’ve found the right piece, create a vignette around the entryway console table, with the idea of inviting guests into a home that is warm and welcoming. Include a lighting element, either a lamp or sconce hung over the table for ambiance. Place potted plants, candles and a tray to keep keys. Choose either a piece of art or a mirror to display over the entryway table, but be sure to measure first. Artwork should be about four to six inches above the table and should be smaller in length compared to the entry console table. On the floor, add a rug for character and comfort as well as color and pattern. Finally, try adding woven baskets or other bins as a way to store throws, shoes or even umbrellas, ensuring guests will immediately feel right at home.
Incorporating a Sofa Console Table in Your Living Room
In a living room, a console table, or sofa table, can serve as an extra source for shelves and storage. You can either anchor your console against a wall, or behind a sofa. Be sure to measure to ensure that your sofa is longer than the console.
We love sofa consoles that feature two or three shelves, which can act as a perfect place to stack books and throws. Round up several of your favorite décor pieces and found items to display on the top, instantly bringing uniqueness and character to the space. For added warmth, place votives and candlesticks in varying heights to add perspective and dimension.
Choosing a Style
As with any furniture, rugs or décor, pick a console that complements and blends well with the style and look of the room. We love a vintage style console table in a more traditional setting. Solid wood, intricate details and old brass fixtures add character and charm. Place one in a hallway or entryway with a handwoven rug, then add vintage-inspired wallpaper as a backdrop.
If you like a more earthy and minimalist look, find a wooden console with simple, straight lines. We love adding handmade textiles and pretty ceramics as décor, and don’t forget to incorporate plenty of plants and greenery as natural elements.
For a modern home, consider a console table with a sleek silhouette and slim profile, constructed from materials like glass, iron and natural wood. Organize the console in a way that doesn’t make it appear chaotic or cluttered, but rather clean and thoughtfully curated.
Console tables add a tasteful aesthetic to a room, while also being practical and functional. Traditionally they have always been thought of as great for entryways, but they act as a necessary anchor in other areas of the home as well, and are incredibly easy to style.
