Dressers

We believe home design should be stylish and distinctive. Whether deciding on the small-space appeal of a chest of drawers or the ample storage of a 9-drawer design, finding the perfect dresser is essential to a well-appointed bedroom. At Lulu and Georgia, our thoughtfully curated collection of timeless and modern dresser designs has elements that bring functional storage and a stylish finish to your edit.

Dressers are a crucial part of defining the look and flow of a bedroom—whether it is your primary suite, a child’s room, or a fully styled guest room. Along with the bed, a dresser helps balance the visual weight of a room while also serving your needs for everyday storage, a bedroom vanity, or a spare surface. From long dressers with a spacious top for a mirror, accessories, and other decor to tall dressers with a compact footprint, there are a wide variety of options to choose from when you buy a new dresser and nearly endless ways to mix and match each with your bedroom set.

Not sure which design fits your home best when shopping for dressers? Don't worry, we have got you covered. Check out a few tips below for styling ideas and inspiration as you choose the perfect piece to buy for your space.

From Tall Dressers to Small Dressers: Our Bedroom Dresser Style Guide

If you’re shopping for bedroom dressers, you’ll notice quite a bit of variety in style, from the number and type of drawers to the material, finish, and detailing. Most dressers will be defined by their size though. So this is a good place to start when shopping. Let’s take a look at some of the basics.

Tall Dressers

Sometimes referred to as a chest of drawers, a tall dresser—like this exclusive Topia 6-Drawer Dresser by Ginny Macdonald—can offer the storage of a large dresser with half the footprint. The trade-off is that it also provides less functional surface space. You can use some well-chosen decor pieces to draw your eyes upward, but a tall frame will not offer as much multi-purpose appeal for getting ready or stashing accessories. You may sometimes also see these referred to as a highboy or tallboy—terms historically used to refer to a taller piece of furniture with a chest of drawers on the bottom and a narrower set of drawers sitting on top, though now both are used to describe tall storage dressers more generally.

Wide Dressers

A wide dresser sits with a lower profile—typically 30” to 40” from the ground—offering two or three columns of drawers plus a spacious top that can be used as a spare surface for jewelry, accessories, or decor. Wide frames are sometimes called a double dresser (for the two columns of drawers). These can range in length from a typical 48” to 60” to an extra-long dresser like our Delancey 9-Drawer Dresser, which measures 85”. Go for as large of a dresser as possible if you have the space (and need the storage), but always measure before you purchase. Remember, in addition to the length, you want to ensure there is plenty of room to open drawers and move around while dressing.

Small Dressers

Sometimes, a compact frame is the most perfect fit. Whether for a child’s room or guest room—or you’re designing around some constraint—a small chest of drawers can offer storage at scale. You can even use our filters to shop by the number of drawers to find a 3-drawer design like this Brooke 3-Drawer Dresser. These can be especially useful in multi-purpose spaces like a home office that serves as a sometimes-guest room because they offer a space for your things without feeling too much like a storage dresser. They also can provide some functional surface space, making them a seamless fit for a dynamic design.

How To Choose A Dresser for Your Bedroom

Bedrooms come in a variety of sizes and styles, even within a single home, and each has a unique flow—and the staggering variety of dressers reflects that. You may be working with a large, spacious primary bedroom that doubles as a morning area to get ready for the day, a kid's bedroom that offers your child a space of their own, or a guest room that doubles as a home office throughout the week. No matter the design, a bedroom is a place where you, your family, or guests collect themselves and prepare for the day, and a dresser is an essential part of that.

As you shop dressers, consider how each style or design folds into the space you have in mind. A lot of this will be about weighing the practical considerations—like size and scale—that we discussed above. But only you are the expert on your space and how you live in it. Take some time to picture living with this piece of furniture.

How much space do you need for clothes and other storage? Do you find yourself more short of surface space or floor space? It can be helpful to start with the basic questions first. Finding a dresser is a balancing act between fitting the piece into your layout while also having the correct number and types of drawers—nobody wants to be bumping into a dresser every morning or contending with an overstuffed sock drawer. When buying a new dresser, you have the opportunity to find the ideal dimensions inside and out with a profile and finish to suit your look—so make it yours.

Complete The Look: Tips for Styling A Modern Dresser

Finding a dresser for your bedroom is only the first step. Making it feel like it belongs there is up to the timeless principles of design. As with any surface, you want to balance functional space with decor that creates visual interest. Visual interest means incorporating a variety of textures, shapes, and dimensions so the curation feels nuanced and layered. Include unexpected elements, such as a vase of flowers or a potted plant for fresh texture alongside luxe touches like marble or brass. A few art books can add color and give you something to browse when you need a break from screen time before bed.

Two elements that can have a disproportionate impact on the room are a mirror or a table lamp. A Pro-tip from designers: if you are styling a tall dresser, lean or mount the mirror centered over the piece. If you are styling a double dresser, place the mirror to one side and loosely balance it with decor on the other. Place your lamp just to the side of the mirror so it can reflect light without obstructing the glass.

However you style it, a dresser allows you to showcase the nuances of your design aesthetic. Loved ones and visitors can immediately get a sense of who you are by seeing how you have utilized this essential part of your bedroom suite to build on the look and flow of the room.
