Satirical and light-hearted, this black chalk and brush painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard juxtaposes a young woman's exaggerated distress over her lost love, with her dog's unwavering loyalty. Fragonard's light, fluent washes also convey a sense of abandonment, and contrast with the arresting precision of the woman's face.
